Fantastic pair of modernist lounge chairs, model 637 Utrecht by the designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld edition Cassina from the 1990s. Each chair has armrests that merge into the front legs. The seat and the backrest come together at an angle to form the back leg. Newly upholstered in a beautiful luxurious ‘dust’ blue color, mohair is exceptional and the chairs are extremely comfortable. With its deisgn, combined with first-class materials and relaxing comfort it sets new standards in any sophisticated livingroom.Gerrit Rietveld came up with the design for the Utrecht armchair in 1935 while working for the Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam, where his brief was to make a chair for serial production. Taking market needs into account, while privileging a comfortable and relaxing experience, led to the elements of the chair being treated as separate units. As a consequence, the chair became an icon of both the Neoplastic movement (aka De Stijl), and of Rietveld’s experimental vision.
